Steve Bird

My journey in winemaking started in 1978, with an after school job at a local winery which quickly paved my passion and career in winemaking. After studying in Australia and completing my degree in wine science, I returned to my homeland where I joined New Zealand's burgeoning wine industry. In 1985 I joined the team at Morton Estate Winery where I spent 11 years under the watchful eye of John Hancock crafting some of New Zealand’s greatest Chardonnays. I struck out on my own in 1996 to develop my first venture “Thornbury Vineyards”. The business grew quickly and by 2005 had gained the attention of Sir George Fistonich from Villa Maria. A deal was negotiated and Sir George bought the business that same year. Steve Bird Wines was the natural next step for us and was up and running in time for the 2006 harvest. “Family is at the heart of the wine-growing tradition and so it is at Steve Bird Wines.
